Pillar Page and Topic Cluster Framework

Pillar Page and Topic Cluster Framework

Note: This is a condensed overview. The complete, canonical framework — with opportunity scoring, the pillar/sub-pillar/spoke architecture, the implementation playbook, KPIs, and the 90-day maintenance cadence — lives in Content Clustering: A Pillar Guide to Building Topical Authority. Use that page as the working reference.

The pillar-page and topic-cluster model moves a site beyond isolated keyword targeting toward demonstrable topical authority, which is what modern, AI-driven search rewards. It runs in four phases:

  1. Strategic selection — choose topics that sit at the intersection of business value, search opportunity, and credible authority; score and prioritize candidates before committing.
  2. Architecture — build a hub-and-spoke structure: a comprehensive pillar (hub) on the core topic, supported by cluster pages (spokes) on specific subtopics, reinforced by a clean URL hierarchy.
  3. Implementation — apply reciprocal internal linking (pillar links to every spoke; every spoke links back), varied descriptive anchor text, strong content quality, and relevant schema.
  4. Measurement — track authority-level KPIs (entity visibility, keyword breadth, share of voice, answer-inclusion rate, conversion lift) rather than page-level traffic alone.

The hub-and-spoke model at a glance

  • Pillar (hub) — a broad overview of the core topic (e.g., /crm/) that links out to all cluster pages.
  • Clusters (spokes) — deep dives on subtopics (e.g., /crm/implementation/, /crm/migration/), each linking back to the pillar and, where relevant, to related spokes.
