cPanel vs. WHM
cPanel has a companion called WHM (WebHost Manager), and the distinction matters:
- cPanel is the end-user panel for managing a single hosting account — what an individual site owner uses.
- WHM is the administrator panel that sits above it, used by the host or a reseller to create and manage many cPanel accounts, set resource limits, and administer the server itself.
One WHM oversees the server; each customer gets their own cPanel within it.
What WHMCS is
WHMCS is a different tool that is easy to confuse with cPanel because of the similar name. It is not a server control panel — it is billing and provisioning automation used by hosting companies and resellers to run the business side. WHMCS handles:
- Billing — plans, invoices, recurring payments, and payment-gateway integration.
- Provisioning — automatically creating a hosting account (in cPanel/WHM, for example) the moment a customer orders and pays, with no manual setup.
- Client management — a customer portal for accounts, invoices, and support tickets.
In short, WHMCS sells and sets up the hosting; cPanel manages the hosting once it exists.
What a client does in the portal
For a typical client, day-to-day hosting management happens across two surfaces. In the billing portal (often WHMCS) they view invoices, pay, upgrade plans, register domains, and open support tickets. In the control panel (often cPanel) they do the technical work: manage files and email, install or update an application, handle SSL, and run backups.
