Databases & WordPress in cPanel

Dynamic sites like WordPress store their content in a MySQL database. cPanel gives you both the database tools and one-click installers to get a site running.

Creating a MySQL database

In the Databases section, open MySQL Databases and:

1. Create a database (give it a clear name).
2. Create a database user with a strong password.
3. Add the user to the database and grant it all privileges.

Note the database name, username, and password, you will need them if you install software manually.

Installing WordPress the easy way

The fastest route is a one-click installer. Look for Softaculous (the modern replacement for the older Fantastico) in the Software section. Choose WordPress, pick the domain and a few settings, and it creates the database and installs WordPress for you in a couple of minutes.

Installing WordPress manually

If you prefer, you can install by hand:

1. Download WordPress and upload it to your web root (public_html).
2. Create a database and user as above.
3. Visit your domain and follow the WordPress setup, entering the database details when prompted.
