Short-tail (or “head”) keywords are broad one- or two-word terms like “SEO” — high search volume, high competition, and vague intent. Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases that attract less volume but carry clearer intent and are far easier to rank for and convert. A strong keyword strategy targets a mix: long-tail terms to win qualified traffic early, and head terms as longer-term authority goals.
