How should an organization decide where to use generative AI?

Sort each task on two questions: what an error would cost, and whether the work needs explicit knowledge you can structure or tacit knowledge like intuition and judgment. Those answers place the task in one of four zones that set the operating model — No Regrets (cheap errors, explicit knowledge) where AI does it all, Creative Catalyst (cheap errors, tacit) where AI offers options and a person picks, Quality Control (costly errors, explicit) where AI produces and a human verifies, and Human-First (costly errors, tacit) where the human leads and AI only assists. Start by mapping tasks where teams spend the most time, pilot in No Regrets to prove ROI, and re-map periodically as models improve and tasks migrate between zones.
