How do AI search engines find and synthesize answers?

AI answer engines use the existing search index as their primary knowledge base. When a user enters a prompt, the system runs multiple background searches — a “query fan-out” — to gather candidate sources. It does not simply grab the top result: the model looks for consensus across several high-authority sources, weighing helpfulness, E-E-A-T, and the same quality signals that govern traditional search. The practical implication is that to be included in an AI answer, your content must first be visible and authoritative in ordinary search.
