SEO is not a one-time project. Campaigns drive the initial gains; a maintenance rhythm keeps them from eroding and surfaces the next opportunities. Broken links, stale content, and technical drift accumulate silently until they hit rankings — this routine catches them first, organized by cadence.
Step 1: Check Search Console weekly
Search Console is your early-warning system, so start each week there. Check the Pages report for new indexing errors and crawl-error spikes, and read the Manual Actions and Security Issues reports — a notification in either is your highest priority and needs immediate attention.
Step 2: Watch rankings and uptime weekly
Keep an eye on the essentials that move fast. Watch for meaningful drops on your priority “money” keywords, confirm the site is reachable, and verify robots.txt hasn’t changed accidentally — a stray Disallow or noindex can quietly cut off traffic.
Step 3: Run a full technical crawl monthly
Once a month, crawl the whole site with Screaming Frog or Sitebulb. Fix broken internal links and collapse redirect chains before they accumulate into a crawl-efficiency problem.
Step 4: Review organic performance monthly
Read the trend, not just the snapshot. In GA4, analyze organic performance by landing page and device; in Search Console, find high-impression, low-CTR pages and rewrite their titles and meta descriptions to recover clicks.
Step 5: Audit backlinks and brand mentions monthly
Review new links in Ahrefs or Semrush and disavow toxic or spammy ones before they drag on trust. While you’re there, collect new unlinked brand mentions and add them to an outreach list to convert into links.
Step 6: Run a content audit quarterly
Every quarter, evaluate the catalog. Flag decaying pages for refresh, merge articles competing for the same keyword to fix cannibalization, and prune or noindex zombie pages that no longer earn their place.
Step 7: Review vitals, competitors, and report quarterly
Close the quarter by connecting data to strategy. Dig into the Core Web Vitals report and run priority pages through PageSpeed Insights, re-run keyword and content-gap analysis against top rivals, then compile a performance report and set SEO priorities for the next quarter.
