Writing an SEO blog post used to mean optimizing for Google alone. Now people also search through assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews answer queries directly — so a post needs to rank in traditional results and be citable by AI. This workflow gets you there.

Step 1: Choose a keyword and the question behind it

Pick a target keyword, and think about the full natural-language question people actually type into an AI assistant. Weigh the term on intent (the goal behind the search), volume, difficulty relative to your authority, and the SERP features present — AI Overviews or “People Also Ask” tell you how the query is currently answered.

Step 2: Match the search intent

Google ranks pages that match intent, and AI cites sources that satisfy the underlying need. Analyze the top results — if they’re how-to guides, write a guide; if they’re listicles, write a list. Then enter the keyword into an assistant and match the shape of its answer, whether that’s steps, a comparison, or a definition.

Step 3: Structure for extractable answers

Structure decides how easily a model can pull an answer from your page. Open with a hook that names the problem, organize with clear H2 and H3 subheadings, and lead each section with its key takeaway (bottom-line-up-front) so it’s easy to cite. Keep paragraphs to two or three sentences.

Step 4: Use your keywords naturally

Include terms without stuffing. Place the primary keyword in the title, intro, and conclusion, work in natural synonyms and variations, and frame some H2s and H3s as the questions people actually ask — this captures voice search and AI prompts while keeping the writing human.

Step 5: Add proof — experience, data, and sources

Genuine insight outperforms generic summaries, and it’s what AI systems favor. Quote internal experts, use proprietary data where you have it, and include specific, well-sourced statistics (“67% of businesses” beats “many businesses”) with a link to the original study. Add a detailed author bio with real credentials to establish E-E-A-T.

Step 6: Optimize the on-page essentials

Tidy the elements that drive clicks and crawling. Write a title tag around 60 characters with the keyword near the front, a meta description around 150 characters with an implied call to action, and add compressed visuals with descriptive alt text. Keep the URL short, lowercase, and hyphenated, avoiding dates so the page stays evergreen.

Add internal links with descriptive anchor text (“read our guide on technical SEO,” never “click here”) to genuinely related resources. Then show a “last updated” date and keep statistics and examples current — freshness is a strong predictor of AI visibility, so a post you maintain keeps earning citations.
