What is the difference between White Hat and Black Hat SEO?

White Hat SEO covers strategies that follow Google’s guidelines and serve people first — high-quality content, clean technical foundations, fast and mobile-friendly pages, and links earned through genuine PR and outreach. It is low risk with durable results, and the only defensible approach for a real business. Black Hat SEO covers tactics that manipulate rankings against the guidelines — keyword stuffing, link farming, cloaking, hidden text, private blog networks, and automated content spam — which can work until they don’t, with de-indexing as the failure mode. Between them sits Gray Hat: tactics not explicitly banned yet but violating the spirit of the rules, carrying moderate-to-high risk as guidelines and detection catch up. SEO ethics is really risk management, which is why the ethical path is also the commercial one.
