This insight pushes back on the 'SEO is dead' narrative, arguing that SEO is expanding rather than disappearing. As search evolves from blue links to AI Overviews and agentic interactions, the fundamentals of SEO (technical excellence, quality content, and demonstrated authority) become the foundation for GEO and agentic optimization.
Every year, someone publishes a “SEO is dead” take. And every year, organic search continues to drive more traffic than any other channel.
What’s actually happening is more interesting than death: SEO is expanding.
Three Layers of Search Optimization
The way we see it, we’re now operating across three layers:
-
Traditional SEO: Optimizing for blue links in search results. Still drives the majority of organic traffic. Technical excellence, quality content, and backlinks. Not going anywhere.
-
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Optimizing to be cited in AI-generated answers. Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT search. This is where fact density, semantic structure, and entity authority matter. GEO doesn’t replace SEO; it requires it.
-
Agentic SEO: The emerging layer. As AI agents increasingly browse the web, make purchases, and gather information autonomously, your content needs to be machine-readable and actionable. Schema markup, MCP endpoints, and structured data become critical for an agentic web where your customer might be an AI acting on a human’s behalf.
Why the Fundamentals Matter More
Here’s the counterintuitive part: the more sophisticated search becomes, the more the fundamentals matter. AI systems choosing which sources to cite are essentially running an automated E-E-A-T evaluation. They prioritize:
- Content with clear, verifiable facts
- Sites with demonstrated topical authority
- Pages with clean technical implementations
- Sources with consistent entity information across the web
These are all traditional SEO fundamentals, executed with more precision.
The Takeaway
The surface of search is changing dramatically. The foundation isn’t. If you’re doing SEO well (building genuine topical authority, creating high-quality content, maintaining technical excellence), you’re already building the foundation for GEO and whatever comes next.
