Cloud hosting
Cloud hosting spreads a site across a pool of connected servers rather than pinning it to one machine. Resources are drawn from the pool on demand.
- Suits: sites with variable or spiky traffic, and anyone prioritizing resilience and scalability.
- Tradeoff: elastic — capacity scales up for a traffic surge and back down afterward — and resilient, since the failure of one underlying machine need not take the site down. Billing can be usage-based, which is efficient but less predictable than a flat monthly fee.
Managed vs. unmanaged
Managed hosting is a service layer that can sit on top of any of the above. The provider handles server maintenance, security hardening, updates, monitoring, and backups; the customer focuses on the site.
