DALL-E (OpenAI)
DALL-E is OpenAI’s text-to-image system, currently in its third generation and reached through ChatGPT (Plus, Team, and Enterprise) and the OpenAI API. It generates original images from natural-language prompts, combining concepts, attributes, and styles on request. DALL-E 3’s defining strength is prompt adherence — it follows detailed instructions, including text within images, more faithfully than most predecessors.
Core capabilities
- Text-to-image generation with high prompt fidelity (DALL-E 3).
- Multiple styles — photorealistic, cartoon, oil painting, and more.
- Outpainting to extend an image beyond its original frame.
- Inpainting to edit specific regions from a prompt.
- Access inside the ChatGPT interface for subscribers, and via API.
Where it fits. Featured images for posts and articles, custom illustrations for social and web, concept visuals for presentations and mood boards, and ad creative (with careful prompting and review).
Pricing. DALL-E 3 access is included in ChatGPT Plus/Team/Enterprise subscriptions (Plus is around $20/month). API usage is billed per image by quality and resolution. Earlier DALL-E 2 access may persist on some platforms under separate credit-based pricing. Check OpenAI for current pricing and access.
Practical notes. Reach for DALL-E when prompt accuracy — specific details, in-image text — matters more than the painterly flair of a tool like Midjourney. Prompting rewards clarity and iteration, and OpenAI’s usage policies govern commercial use and content restrictions.
